One of the scholars researching the question of the New and Old Styles, E. Predtechensky, a full member of the Russian Astronomical Society, says that it was only during the Renaissance that the West began to address, among other scientific questions, the Easter calculation. "Unfortunately," he declares, "having barely grasped the structure of the Alexandrian canon, and perhaps not quite grasped it properly, Western Paschalists soon wanted to be reformers and presumptuously set about correcting a beautifully executed work." According to Predtechensky, "if the Renaissance had begun simultaneously in both the West and the ancient East of Europe, if unfortunate circumstances had not completely ruined education in the ancient Christian Churches of Byzantium... if the Alexandrian traditions and the education of the first centuries had not been interrupted in the East, then the entire reform carried out by Pope Gregory XIII would hardly have been possible."
