"The Man Inside Out" is the second novel by the brilliant Fred Vargas, starring the legendary Inspector Adamsberg. This time, the gripping plot unfolds in the mountains, where ancient legends and superstitions still live on. Sheep are found daily in the alpine pastures, apparently the prey of an unseen giant wolf. Soon, a local farmer's victim turns out to be a woman: lacerations on her neck, a pool of blood, and marks of the wolf's teeth. The peasants begin to talk of a werewolf—a half-man, half-wolf from ancient legends. Three people set out to hunt the beast in human form: the adopted son of the deceased woman, an old shepherd, and the Parisian Camille Forestier, Inspector Adamsberg's ever-elusive love. But the Inspector is not one to believe in werewolves; he conducts his investigation using methods known only to him. The novel was the basis for a television film and won three literary awards.
Fred Vargas's books about Commissioner Adamsberg have been translated into forty languages and have received numerous national and international awards, including three British Duncan Laurie Daggers and the Princess of Asturias Prize, known as the "Spanish Nobel."
