Pitirim Sorokin's (1889–1968) monograph, published in English in 1942, concludes nearly 25 years of research by a leading Russian scholar on the "sociology of revolution," "sociology of war," "sociology of famine," and "sociology of epidemics." These "four monsters," as the sociologist called them, continue to torment humanity. Although the nature of social cataclysms has changed in our time, their sociological component, as well as the patterns of human behavior identified and described by Sorokin, have remained unchanged.
The book is addressed to both sociologists and those new to sociology.
