Ludwig von Mises (1881–1973) was one of the greatest thinkers of the 20th century, an Austrian economist and social scientist. From 1940 onward, he lived and worked in the United States.

This book presents a systematic exposition of economic science from its very foundations to economic policy, including epistemology and methodology. It presents theories of value, economic calculation, monetary prices and credit, theories of capital and interest, and the author's own theory of business cycles with the requisite comprehensiveness. Both market and socialist economies are comprehensively examined, as well as the consequences of government intervention in the economy.

With this treatise, the author completed the transformation of classical political economy as a science of the economic aspects of human activity and the theory of market prices into a general theory of human choice—a science that addresses all human activity.

For economists, historians, sociologists, and political scientists, as well as for anyone interested in the laws of price and wage formation, the causes of economic crises, the factors of economic growth, and who monitors exchange rate fluctuations.
