The beginning of the 20th century. Jack Parker and his sister Lula were left without a father and mother after they were killed by a smallpox epidemic. Together with their grandfather, they set off on a journey, but at the crossing, bank robbers kill the grandfather and kidnap his sister. Jack miraculously escapes and gets to the nearest town, but no one cares about him there. There is nowhere to wait for help, and only two people agree to save Lula in exchange for the Parkers' land: the sharp-tongued dwarf Reginald, nicknamed Shorty, who shoots accurately and is angry at the whole world, and the huge gravedigger Eustace, the son of a former slave. Together they go to the Thicket, where even the rangers try to avoid, on the trail of the gang of Merciless Bill, a sadist and cruel killer. Soon Jack will understand that life is worthless in these lands, and whoever came here will never return the same. If, of course, he returns.
