A historical novel set in Boston in 1662.

Mary Deerfield is 24 years old. She has porcelain skin and blue eyes—in England, she might have many admirers. But here, in the New World, Mary is the wife of Thomas Deerfield, a powerful and cruel man. She lives in a time when talking to a stranger can lead to being called a fallen woman, and trying to cure someone with herbs can lead to being called a witch. In this world, everyone spies on their neighbors and can report on each other. But the bruises and injuries that sometimes occur after a quarrel with their husband are overlooked.

Mary is unlike others. She is kind to strangers, cannot stand hypocrisy, and always strives to act according to her conscience. One day, the girl herself becomes the target of rumors and suspicions when neighbors discover that she tried to cure a boy with medicinal herbs. She is called a witch, and in a fit of rage, her husband stabs her in the back of her hand with a fork. Now she must show courage to save herself not only from her cruel husband, but also from the gallows.
