The ancient world of the "Slavic clan" - from the Arctic Ocean to the southern lands on the shores of the Adriatic, from the North Sea in the west of Europe to the present-day Russian lands in the east of the continent... What is this - the musings of an "alternative" Slavophile historian or a novelist who has chosen the genre of Russian "fantasy"? No: Mavro Orbini, the author of this book, first published in 1601 in Italian - the abbot of a Benedictine monastery - belonged to the culture of the West. But his work is a hymn to the greatness of Slavs, solemn and pathetic, despite the fact that the author follows the millennia-old tradition of Western historiography, the testimonies of chroniclers forgotten in recent centuries of brutal wars and politicized science. In this very contradiction lurks the mystery of a small and outline but quite extraordinary book. Many of its primary sources are unique or forgotten nowadays. In addition, the author - Dalmatian humanist, southern Slav - persistently defends the idea of the origin of the ancestors of the "Slavic family" from the Hyperborean North, the European Nord... unexpected for him. There is an opinion that Orbini's work was included by the Vatican in the "Index" of books forbidden for reading and publishing in Catholic countries; but some researchers deny this fact, although Orbini almost on every page refers to the works of "forbidden" historians of Protestant orientation (in Western Christianity then it was the main reason for banning the book by Rome). The situation in fact is even more unusual: Orbini's book was indeed included in one of the numerous "Indexes", but... under a foreign, though similar-sounding name! Why?! Truly a man of mystery... The book in our edition is published in the 1722 translation by the outstanding Russian diplomat of the Petrine era, Serbian Savoy Vladislavic. The article-commentary and page notes will help the reader to understand the historical research of the Dalmatian scholar written in a manner unusual for our time, expressive and dynamic. Sensational and unusually large-scale, it does not refute, but, on the contrary, confirms the medieval information about the ancestors of the Slavs, finding unexpected analogies in the bold hypotheses and discoveries of modern scientists.
