1656. Tsar Alexei Mikhailovich dispatches a large embassy to Venice to establish political and trade ties with wealthy and developed Europe. A window to Europe will not be opened anytime soon. Only Alexei Mikhailovich's son, Peter, will succeed, but no one can foresee the future, so great hopes are pinned on the embassy to Venice. Tsar Alexei Mikhailovich places particular hope in young Alexander Zalessky, the son of a nobleman who is exceptionally educated, meaning he is capable of absorbing foreign culture and new knowledge. Therefore, Alexander is ordered to observe everything there is to see during his trip to Venice. Alas, the ability to perceive new things has its downside. Will the young man, having seen enough of the wonderful life abroad, decide to remain in a foreign land forever?
