Nominee for the World Fantasy Award and the Mythopoeic Award.
The Mystical Other Side of California!
Howard Barton has come to Mendocino in search of paper origami. And not just any old piece of paper, but a sketch by the legendary Japanese artist Hokusai. But Howard, unfortunately, is not the only one who wants this sketch.
There is also Eloise Lamey, whose lush and dangerous garden is watered with blood and other strange liquids.
And the mysterious Mr. Jimmers, the owner of a workshop where a strange invention designed for necromancy is stored.
Even Howard's Uncle Roy, a haunted house builder and founder of the Museum of Modern Mysteries, shows interest in this sketch.
In Northern California, nothing is what it seems, but everything is connected - and Howard finds himself embroiled in a secret war between secret underground societies. Now he just has to figure out whose side he's on in his quest for the paper Grail.
And not far away, in Orange County, the trio of friends encounter bizarre manifestations of evil.
Under the cover of night, a man climbs the tower of St. Anthony's Church, driven by an obsessive desire to silence the bells.
In a deserted alley, a seemingly random victim is incinerated by a stream of flame.
And in the deceptive light of day, Walt Stebbins receives a strange Chinese artifact in the mail - a glass jar containing the preserved body of a bluebird.
Such things usually do not happen in their quiet town. Ordinary people do not expect to encounter real evil in their backyard. But as Walt unravels the mystery of the Bird, he learns that the battle between the forces of light and darkness is literally happening every day before his eyes.
