This collection includes B. M. Eikhenbaum's works on Russian prose writers. The material is divided into three sections: studies of Leo Tolstoy, studies devoted to writers from the late 18th century to the Soviet era, and short articles and notes of various content (including textual criticism).

Boris Mikhailovich Eikhenbaum (1866–1959) was a literary historian who left a lasting mark on scholarship. His significant literary studies include: "The Illusion of the Tale" (1918), "The Melody of Russian Literary Verse" (1922), "How 'The Overcoat' Is Made" (1919), "Anna Akhmatova," "Young Tolstoy," and "Lermontov: An Experience in Historical and Literary Evaluation."
