"Let's hope for the best..." From the epistolary legacy of D. S. Likhachev: 1938–1999

The legacy of Dmitry Sergeevich Likhachev - philologist and Slavist, specialist in Old Russian literature, one of the pillars of Russian culture and science of the 20th century - includes many different genres, from monographs and articles to essays and memoirs. However, for a long time another important part of his manuscript heritage - epistolary - remained unexplored. This book publishes D. S. Likhachev's letters and replies from his correspondents for the period from 1938 to 1999. The addressees include scientists, cultural figures, friends and publishers, and statesmen (including Mikhail Gorbachev and Boris Yeltsin). The published correspondence reflects important scientific discussions that took place orally and on the pages of periodicals (on the problems of textology, the authenticity of "The Tale of Igor's Campaign", the methodology of studying Russian chronicles, etc.), discussion of the "Literary Monuments" series, preparation and participation in international conferences on the humanities, including the congresses of the International Committee of Slavists and its Editional-Textual Commission. In addition, the letters provide insights into the everyday life, interests, and lifestyle of the humanitarian scientific intelligentsia of the twentieth century, and into the friendships between D. S. Likhachev and his contemporaries.
