This book is the result of the author, art historian Maria Nikolaeva,'s leisurely strolls through Budapest. Recounting her experiences along the way, she rediscovers the city herself: "I realized what makes Budapest so appealing to me. For centuries, it has been an accepting, inviting, multinational city, and even the tragic 20th century hasn't broken its spirit." The book is populated by the city's residents—historical figures and contemporaries—whose history lives and continues in the fabric of the city.
This is not a guidebook; it doesn't contain hotel or restaurant locations, or bathing recommendations, and it's quite possible that not all the main tourist attractions are mentioned. But this book is about how one can (and should) enjoy Budapest. Take in the Hungarian capital from the heights of Gellért Hill, descend into labyrinths and catacombs, admire the stucco decorations on the buildings and the lacy wrought-iron balconies, lean over miniature sculptures and admire the colorful roofs, and visit a huge synagogue and a small Serbian church. There's something for everyone in Budapest.
