This innovative six-tube ship, built in a single copy and named after the national heroine of France, became the first large armored cruiser of the fleet of the French Republic. For its time, "Jeanne d'Arc" organically combined excellent seaworthiness with powerful armor. It was this cruiser that basically determined the appearance of the second-generation French armored cruiser, the British response to it, and the reaction of other maritime powers. Nevertheless, the speed of the Joan of Arc, despite all the efforts of the designers, turned out to be lower than the design one, which did not give the superiority desired by the French Naval Ministry over the ships of the Royal Navy. The conclusion of an agreement with Great Britain, a few years after the entry of the Jeanne into service, depreciated the numerous French armored cruisers, since they turned out to be too large and expensive for the Adriatic Sea. On the eve of World War I, Jeanne was used as a training cruiser (for example, François Darlan, the future admiral and naval minister of the Vichy collaborationist government, served as a navigation teacher on it), and in 1915 she covered the landing in the Dardanelles operation, operated in the Levantine Sea, where fired on Turkish and German targets in Alexandretta and Haifa. A new book by a leading specialist in the history of the French Navy restores in detail the history of the creation, service and combat use of the six-pipe armored cruiser Jeanne d'Arc. The edition is illustrated with exclusive drawings and photographs.
