On the first cruisers of France everything was sacrificed to speed, and therefore, having given up the idea of protecting them from large bursting shells, they were satisfied with a simple armored deck. Because of its convexity, shells fired from guns of medium caliber, could hit it only at very low angles, which was recognized as sufficient to protect the vital parts of the ship. When projectiles of greater penetrating power appeared, there was a complete revolution in shipbuilding. These projectiles had to be counteracted by sufficient resistance to make their action detectable outside the ship. But such resistance could only provide armor - and here unprotected until then cruisers became the best protected ships of the fleet: they were armored from bow to stern and from top to bottom.
The first armored cruiser was "Dupuy-de-Lome", built according to the project of ship engineer De Bussy. She was launched in 1890 and participated in the Kiel festivities and the Portsmouth naval review, serving everywhere as an object of admiration for foreign sailors.
