"Benedetto Breen" was built at the Castellammare di Stabia shipyard. She was laid down on January 30, 1899 and launched on November 7, 1901 in the presence of the King and Queen of Italy, government officials and ships of the entire Italian Mediterranean squadron. Completion continued for the next four years, and was completed on September 1, 1905. Such a long construction period was caused primarily by delays in the supply of material and in particular belt armor. After entering service, the ship joined the Mediterranean squadron.
Battleships of the type "Regina Elena" - the last series of Italian squadron battleships of the pre-dreadnought period. Not typical for its time, this project was a development of the unrealized project of armored cruiser with uniform main artillery of 203-mm caliber, proposed by Admiral V. Cuniberti.
