The squadron battleships, named after outstanding figures of the Age of Enlightenment and the French Revolution, were the culmination of the development of shipbuilding in France on the eve of the First World War, symbolizing its ambitions in the race of naval powers and could rightfully claim the title of the strongest in the world.
The Danton-class battleships, armed with twelve 305-mm main caliber guns, were the last series of ships of the pre-dreadnought era built for the French Navy. All six battleships, "Danton", "Condorcet", "Diderot", "Voltaire", "Mirabeau" and "Vergniaud", were actively used in naval operations of the First World War: they participated in the Battle of Antivari in the Adriatic Sea, patrolled the Mediterranean Sea, guarded French ports, ensured the safety of convoys, blockaded the German, Austro-Hungarian and Turkish fleets, and supported the Allied forces.
The only combat loss of the series was the lead ship, "Danton", sunk by a German submarine in 1917 (it was found at the bottom by divers in the 21st century). After the war, the battleship "Mirabeau" was sent to the Black Sea, where it participated in supporting the White Army during the Civil War in Russia.
The book by the leading researcher of the French Navy tells in detail the history of the creation, design, service and combat path of the last French battleships, which became a symbol of the naval power of the Third Republic. The publication is illustrated with a large number of photographs from private collections and copies of original drawings.
