Fedor Abramov (1920-1983) was born into a peasant family in the village of Verkola, Arkhangelsk region. In June 1941, he volunteered to the front, was wounded, survived the blockade winter in the Leningrad hospital. “At the end of the winter forty-second year, I, a seriously wounded front-line soldier, was taken from besieged Leningrad to the Big Land,” Abramov recalled. After long wanderings in hospitals, I finally found myself in my homeland – in the deep forests of the Arkhangelsk region. I saw a great deal of human suffering that summer. But even more – courage, endurance and Russian spiritual generosity. On the basis of what he saw was born “Brothers and Sisters”, the debut novel by Fyodor Abramov. The book was published in the magazine “Neva” in 1958 and immediately won the love of readers, and subsequently received a continuation in the novels “Two winters and three summers”, “Ways-crossroads”, “House”.
