The rivalry between the two rulers of Western Europe, Emperor Charles V and King Francis I, was the central event of sixteenth-century European history. Powerful and wealthy France was confronted with the empire of Charles V, which suddenly grew on its borders and included Germany, the Netherlands, Southern Italy and Sicily, Spain and the Spanish colonies in the New World. The personalities of the young and ambitious sovereigns, Francis and Charles, who sought to outdo each other, played no small part in the conflict. The war that broke out between king and emperor led to dramatic events, most notably the French defeat at the Battle of Pavia and the capture of King Francis I of France.
