The album was prepared for the 250th anniversary of the Bolshoi Theater.
The album features previously unpublished photographs of the greatest ballet dancers of the mid-20th century. The legendary Galina Ulanova, Marina Semenova, and Asaf Messerer, and Maya Plisetskaya, who had already reached the pinnacle of her fame and reigned over all, as well as the new generation—Ekaterina Maximova and Vladimir Vasiliev, Natalia Bessmertnova, Yuri Vladimirov, Mikhail Lavrovsky,
Maris Liepa, Boris Akimov, Nina Sorokina, and very young dancers—Nadezhda Pavlova, Vyacheslav Gordeyev, Nina Semizorova, Alla Mikhalchenko, Lyudmila Semenyaka, Nina Ananiashvili, and Andris
Liepa.
In the book, Grigory Verkhovsky recounts how he managed to visit literally every corner of the theater—classrooms and rehearsals, the costume and dressing rooms of outstanding dancers, and
even the rooftop with the famous horses by sculptor Pyotr Klodt, offering a breathtaking view of Theater Square and the Moscow panorama all the way to the Kremlin towers.
The album also features photographs by Ekaterina Vladimirova and celebrated dancers of the 21st century—Svetlana Zakharova, Nikolai Tsiskaridze, Denis Rodkin, Maria Vinogradova, Ivan Vasiliev, Maria Alexandrova, Vyacheslav Lopatin, Anna Nikulina, and many, many others.
