1939. London is in turmoil - Great Britain has declared war on Nazi Germany, whose troops are rampaging across Europe. The capital is overflowing with refugees; in anticipation of air raids and shelling, Londoners sign up as volunteers, participate in training to clear future rubble and evacuate civilians. Young artist Frances Faviell returns to the capital from a trip to the British colonies, where she earned a good living painting portraits of Indian rajas, and at first she is amused and irritated by the seemingly useless bustle of London. However, when the fascists, as part of Operation Blitz, begin massive bombing of London, the jokes end... Now Frances records the air raids, destruction and human suffering on paper...
