On January 13, 1945, troops of the 2nd and 3rd Belorussian Fronts launched the East Prussian Operation, aiming to cut off the East Prussian German troop group from the main areas of Germany, dismember it, and systematically destroy it. The operation also aimed to capture Königsberg, which was not just a large fortress city on the Baltic coast but also the political and strategic center of the entire East Prussian military system.

Lasting nearly four months, the operation became one of the largest strategic operations of the Red Army. Under difficult terrain and adverse weather conditions, Soviet troops had to overcome fortified areas prepared for a long, stubborn, and bloody defense (Königsberg itself was protected by a system of forts and numerous stone buildings).

A new book by renowned historian M. V. Kolomiets provides a detailed account of the preparations and progress of the operation that culminated on April 25, 1945, with the capture of Königsberg and the defeat of the Samland group of German troops.

The publication is illustrated with numerous rare photographs.
