This book by a team of authors, who in recent years have published works on the Battle of Berlin, the Donbass, Rzhev, and the Rzhev Salient, is the first volume of a planned four-volume work, "The Battle for the Caucasus." It describes the combat operations on the ground, in the air, and at sea from July to September 1942, which unfolded in the foothills and mountains of the Caucasus. This battle continues to loom large in the shadow of the Battle of Stalingrad, while it was precisely the stubborn defense of the Caucasus that prevented the enemy from capturing the Baku oil fields, on which the very possibility of the USSR continuing the war depended. The heroic defense of the Caucasus predetermined the outcome of the 1942 campaign, and ultimately, the outcome of the entire war, a fact reflected in the Day of the Defeat of Nazi Troops in the Battle of the Caucasus (October 9), established in 2020. For the first time in recent years, a significant body of new archival documents is being introduced into scholarly circulation, along with new maps that allow for a complete picture of the battles to be reconstructed. The comprehensive nature of the study fills an existing gap in historiography and opens up new possibilities for studying the military operations in the Caucasus.
