Domesticated more than 10,000 years ago, the bull has remained the wildest domestic animal. At all times and in all cultures, the bull symbolized energy and fertility, and for many ancient peoples the bull was an awe-inspiring deity.
However, Christianity, from its inception, began to fight against bull cults; as a result of this influence, the bull became a peaceful, calm and industrious animal - and in time, it was completely relegated to pastoral landscapes. It was not until much later, already during the Industrial Revolution, that the bull regained "power" in culture, becoming a symbol of might, industriousness, primal forces, and the earth as such.
This history, the cultural evolution of the image, its artistic representations and its impact on humanity are the subject of this book by the world-renowned historian Michel Pastoureau.
