This is a remarkable example of the collaboration between the talented educator Dmitry Mikhailovich Berezkin (born c. 1865), an inspector of public schools and a staff member first at the Tobolsk and then at the Tver Theological Seminary, and the talented artist Yakov Andreevich Chakhrov (1875–1942), a student of Ilya Efimovich Repin. Together, they managed to describe the flora of Ancient Israel and Egypt as it appears in the Bible.
The author provides a botanical description, information about the plant's distribution in the Middle East, its cultural, medicinal, and economic significance, and, of course, the biblical context, interpreting complex passages of Scripture. What is the peg from which the Temple of the Most High God was built in Jerusalem? Where did the plants come from in Israel, and how did viticulture and winemaking develop there, giving rise to one of the symbols of Christ and his disciples? In the shade of what plant did the prophet Jonah shelter? With the bitter fruit of which tree was the prodigal son unable to feed his flock because it was eaten by the hungry? Extensive answers to many questions in the field of biblical botany are provided in the author's text. These are expanded and clarified in the notes by Alexander Stanislavovich Mozgovoy, a researcher in the Department of Botany at St. Petersburg University.
