"The Stowaway" is one of the best books by Spanish writer Ana Maria Matute (1925-2014). One day, three honorable señoritas found a basket with a baby at the threshold of their house. They named him Juju and began with great love and zeal to raise and educate the foundling, each in his own way. One of them strove to give the boy a good education, the second taught him good manners and instilled a taste for music and poetry, the third accustomed him to daily hard work. By the age of ten, Juju was a bookworm, a dreamer and could do a lot with his own hands. The boy sets up his own "sailing ship" in the attic and dreams of sea voyages. One day he stumbles in the barn on a wounded criminal who has escaped from prison. Despite the horror of the first moments of the encounter, Juju feels compassion for the uninvited guest, cleverly deceives the police searching for the fugitive and hides him in his attic. Juju manages to steal enough food from the kitchen to feed the fugitive, and even cures the terrible wound on his leg. Soon he finds in him an excellent companion and an equally fanatical lover of wandering and sailing. And now the adult and the child have a plan: as soon as spring comes, they will go together to distant lands. But the stowaway (as Juju calls his friend) sneaks off alone. Juju rushes after him and almost gets killed. The book about the betrayal and remorse of an adult, about a pure soul and the rapid growth of a boy will be read and reread with bated breath by children 7-10 years old. Not only children, but also parents will read it with the same interest and pleasure.
