"Only denial, without any magnanimity and without any strength," proclaims the novel's protagonist, Nikolai Stavrogin, essentially describing the political unrest in Russia in the 1870s. Dostoevsky had already written "The Idiot," "Crime and Punishment," and "The Gambler," and was preparing to begin writing the book of his life. But at this time, a revolutionary terrorist movement was raging in St. Petersburg, culminating in the murder of a student, orchestrated by Sergei Nechayev, the leader of the "People's Reprisal" party. Realizing the absurdity and cruelty of such forms of struggle compelled Dostoevsky to put aside his work and take up "Demons." Today, when the novel remains as relevant as it was 150 years ago, there is no doubt that Dostoevsky wrote a great book.

The artist Yuri Gershkovich is a match for Dostoevsky. In his illustrations, the darkness, vileness, and melancholy of human existence are refracted into evil, caricatured characters juggling meaning, truth, and the lives of others.
