The novel "Demons" occupies a special place in the work of Fyodor Dostoevsky. It is not only included in the writer's so-called "Great Pentateuch" along with "Crime and Punishment," "The Idiot," "The Adolescent," and "The Brothers Karamazov," but also stands out among them. This novel, devoted to the problematic of the confrontation between darkness and light, evil and good, was conceived by Dostoevsky in 1870 after the assassination in Moscow of one of the members of Sergei Nechayev's underground organization, Ivan Ivanov, who intended to break with it, by a terrorist group led by Sergei Nechayev. The writer perceptively sensed that phenomena of this kind were the result of a whole complex of problems that had been accumulating in the country for centuries. However, "Demons" is a work not only about Nechayev and the Nechayev movement; But also about the possibility and necessity of the human soul to overcome all temptations and doubts, to endure all trials and find the path of salvation, following which one can triumph over the demonic forces triumphant in the world—evil, lies, and other vices. At the same time, "Demons" is a large-scale literary work, depicting in an original narrative form the life of a provincial town during fateful events.
