Yuri Mikhailovich Lotman (1922-1993) - world-renowned scientist, outstanding literary critic, cultural critic, one of the founders of Russian semiotics, professor at the University of Tartu. "Conversations on Russian Culture" is a unique book, a study devoted to the most attractive period of Russian history - the 18th - early 19th century. It was then, according to Lotman, that the "family album of our present-day culture", its "home archive" emerged. Balls, dandyism, card playing, matchmaking, dueling - all this still attracts us with its charm and aesthetics. The reader will find many literary references and real stories that are not told in history or literature classes: How did a complaint to Nicholas I about the poor nutrition in the Smolny Institute of one of the graduates turn out? What was the difference between a French letter to the sovereign written by a man and the same letter written by a woman? What surprised the captain of a Japanese schooner in the Russian wedding ceremony? The book pays special attention to the position of women: how exactly Europeanization touched the family way of life, how with the reforms changed the image of women - her clothes, type, image in literature and education. The edition is richly illustrated with photographs of everyday objects and photographic reproductions of works of art from the collections of the State Hermitage and the Russian Museum, as well as facsimiles of drawings from A. S. Pushkin's drafts.
