One can get acquainted with the maxims of Confucius, who became the main moral and ethical tuning for China, by reading the collection "Lun Yu". This collection, known in Russian culture as "Conversations and judgments", contains the advice of this sage, his judgments about life and people. "Lun Yu" - one of the main Confucian treatises. It was compiled by the disciples of the sage after the death of Confucius.Since the XII century in China, the study of "Conversations and judgments" became mandatory for passing state examinations. Applicants for public office this work was required to learn by heart, because Confucius demanded strict compliance with existing laws and rules in society. However, he not only preached certain moral and ethical principles, but also lived by them. This powerful human figure, which, going back in time, with each century of Chinese history became more and more large, can be compared to the biblical Moses.In 1687, the collection "Lun Yu", written in ancient Chinese, was translated into Latin by a group of Jesuit monks, who at that time had many missions in China. Thus Europeans were first introduced to the figure of Confucius and began to gradually realize the extent of his posthumous influence on Chinese civilization.The texts of the Conversations and Judgments are traditionally divided into twenty chapters, named by the first expression encountered in them. In this edition, each maxim is given in alternative translations by two of the greatest Russian Chinese scholars of the nineteenth century, corresponding members of the Academy of Sciences.The first of them, Vasily Pavlovich Vasiliev, graduated brilliantly from the Faculty of History and Philology of Kazan University, and then was sent to Beijing, where he lived for more than nine years, studying Sanskrit, Chinese, Tibetan, Mongolian, and Manchu languages. As a result, by the end of the nineteenth century he had become a major Russian orientalist.The second, Pavel Stepanovich Popov, translated "Lun Yu" into Russian somewhat later than his colleague. He graduated from the Faculty of Oriental Languages of St. Petersburg University, and then worked for a long time as a member of the diplomatic mission in Beijing, translating the works of ancient Chinese philosophers, and also became the largest Russian Chinese scholar of his time. He compiled a fundamental Russian-Chinese dictionary, which went through more than one edition. His translation of "Conversations and Judgments" is characterized by accuracy, expressiveness and closeness to the original.The book also contains the original hieroglyphic texts of the source material, detailed comments of P. S. Popov to each maxim.The edition is illustrated with drawings of myths and legends from the life of Confucius with their summary.
