The conversation between St. Seraphim of Sarov and the Simbirsk landowner N.A. Motovilov about the purpose of Christian life took place in November 1831 in the forest, not far from the Sarov Monastery. Thanks to his remarkable memory, Nikolai Alexandrovich preserved and recorded every word and style of speech of St. Seraphim. Seventy years later, the renowned Christian writer and publicist S.A. Nilus discovered the manuscript among N.A. Motovilov's papers and, after extensive work on recognizing the text, published it.

A deep admirer of St. Seraphim, N.A. Motovilov, the elder's interlocutor and confidant, always enjoyed his extraordinary trust and love, calling himself "Seraphim's servant." In turn, the saint introduced him as a confidant into the mysteries of his spiritual work, not only for his personal use but also through him for the entire world.

This divinely inspired discourse, which no modern theological work on the action of the Holy Spirit on man can ignore, truly contains a treasure that can be called the greatest testimony of faith.
