The book is devoted to one of the key themes of the Russian Civil War - the interaction between the political authorities and the peasant majority of the country's population. The events of 1917-1922 gave rise to many variants of such interaction on both the red and white sides. All sides of the confrontation involved the village in the armed struggle, otherwise it was impossible to count on a military victory. At the same time, communication with the "man" was universally recognized as the Achilles' heel of the White movement.
The inability to create confidence in the coming of firm power, to dispel old social phobias, to raise the village en masse under national banners became one of the obvious reasons for the failure of the White struggle. It is all the more important to analyze in detail the experience of successful cooperation between the White military and political authorities and the rural population.
One such story unfolded on the border of the Don Army Region and Saratov Province, against the backdrop of the famous battle for Tsaritsyn. Energetic officer V.K. Manakin with the support of the Don ataman P.N. Krasnov was able to create a combat-ready formation of peasants from the south of Saratov province - the Saratov Corps. The history of this military formation is considered in the context of the Civil War in the South, peasant-Cossack relations, the peculiarities of military construction of the Army of the Don, Volunteer, Southern, Astrakhan armies. The mood and behavior of Saratov peasants are compared with those of peasants of Stavropol, Astrakhan, Voronezh provinces.
