"The White Guard" is Mikhail Bulgakov's first novel. It's a book about persevering when the world is crumbling, and about the strength of the human soul in the face of adversity.

The novel, whose characters are encoded with Bulgakov's family and friends—including himself—is based on the writer's memoirs of the events of the Civil War that took place at the end of 1918. "I dare say this will be a novel that will make the sky burn," he wrote, later calling "The White Guard" one of his favorite works.

The home of the Turbin family—two brothers and a sister—with its tiled stove, samovar, and shaded lamp seems the only safe place in a country engulfed in civil war. However, when the enemy enters the city, everyone faces a choice: flee or fight, even knowing the odds are against them?
