This book collects: the novel "The White Guard", the plays "Days of the Turbins" and "The Run", and precedes them with an article on the difficult relationship between Mikhail Bulgakov and the Soviet government and his theatrical works, prepared by the author of the magazine "Eksmo" Sasha Filbar. The novel The White Guard is about the Civil War. Bulgakov describes real events in Kiev in 1918, and many characters had existing prototypes, so the novel has not only artistic, but also documentary value. Criticism received it ambiguously, with the Soviet authorities and émigré circles finding it too loyal to the opposite side. Conceived as part of a larger trilogy about the years of the Civil War, The White Guard remained the only part written, but served as the basis for the play The Days of the Turbins. The play was commissioned by the Moscow Art Theater in 1925 and authorized for production a year later. Like the novel, it describes the events of the Civil War and the personal tragedy of the Turbin family, which took place against the background of the breakdown of epochs and the collapse of the old life. The play "The Run" is based on the memoirs of Bulgakov's second wife about emigration during the Civil War and also describes real events. During the author's lifetime, the play was not staged, it was criticized personally by Stalin: "Run" as it is, represents an anti-Soviet phenomenon. It was first performed on stage in 1957.
