"The White Guard" is the first major work by Mikhail Bulgakov, one of the best in his creative legacy. This edition presents a scientifically prepared text of the novel, restored from lifetime editions. At the same time, the appearance envisaged by the author has been preserved - original visual and graphic techniques, typesetting features have been fully reproduced. To make it easier for the reader to navigate the plot topography, a complete map of Kyiv at the beginning of the 20th century is included.
"The White Guard" has a difficult creative history - in fact, the book was created for about ten years. Along with the final text, this edition includes fragments of early editions, helping to imagine the dynamics of the idea.
The Appendix includes fragments of fiction and documentary texts from the 1920s, directly related to the history of "The White Guard" - excerpts from the novel "Table Mountain" by Yu. L. Slezkine, the book by V. B. Shklovsky's "Sentimental Journey", and the memoirs of R.B. Gul.
The publication is supplied with a rich illustrative series: portraits of the writer's relatives and acquaintances, historical figures who served as prototypes for the characters of "The White Guard", as well as photographs of those places in Kyiv with which the plot of Bulgakov's novel is connected are reproduced.
