In her best novel, Austrian writer Monika Helfer describes the story of her own family with astonishing sincerity and frankness. She refrains from judging anyone; love guides her pen, and truth is the highest justice. The word "baggage" in German has a secondary, disparaging meaning, like our "suitcase without a handle"—a term for people who cause a lot of trouble.

It was precisely from such "baggage" that Helfer emerged. The narrative centers on the events of 1914-1920, but when a child from a "baggage" family comes into the author's attention, she casually mentions their subsequent fate. As a result, we are presented with a more or less complete biography of each character.
Thanks to this, everything "happens one after another, yet one after another, like in a painting by Pieter Bruegel the Elder."
