"Grandmother" by Božena Němcová (1820–1862) is the most famous and frequently published book in the Czech Republic. By the end of the 19th century, it had become a symbol of Czech culture. The plot of the story is very simple: Grandmother Madeleine leaves her village and comes to her daughter to help her with the housework and babysit her grandchildren. The children immediately fell in love with the kind grandmother, who knows many amazing stories, signs and beliefs and personally met Emperor Joseph himself! They listen with pleasure to her stories about the past, take part in all the holidays and learn wisdom and patience from their grandmother. The popularity of the story "Grandmother" in the Czech Republic is difficult to overestimate (its characters are even printed on banknotes), but it is also well known outside the country - the story has been translated into 20 languages and has been filmed several times. This edition presents the text in a new translation with illustrations by the remarkable Czech artist Adolf Kašpar (1877–1934).
