During World War I, the Hussar and Tatra-class destroyers formed the core of the Austro-Hungarian Navy's light forces, which confronted the vastly superior forces of the Entente in the Adriatic Sea. This new book by leading naval historians is the first Russian study of the development, design, and combat use of Austro-Hungarian destroyers.
The authors examine in detail the development of destroyers during the dual monarchy, from the Hussars, typical early 20th-century "destroyers" built to designs by the British firm Yarrow, to the turbine-powered Tatra destroyers and their wartime modification, the Ersatz Tatra. Considerable attention is given to specific combat episodes: actions off the Montenegrin coast, the Battle of Cape Rodoni on December 29, 1915, operations in the Trieste and Otranto areas, the battle with the British, French, and Italians in the Strait of Otranto on May 15, 1917, and the final stage of the Adriatic campaign. Special attention is given to the latest Austro-Hungarian torpedo boat designs and the service of destroyers under foreign flags after the collapse of the Habsburg Empire.
