The book is devoted primarily to the actions of the Soviet and German aviation in the battle for Stalingrad, held from early August to November 18, 1942, the work consists of four chapters. In the beginning it tells about the organization of air defense and air defense of the city, its preparation for the upcoming battles. Later the course of the fight in the air is shown against the background of a fierce battle on the ground. Considerable attention is paid to: one of the main heroes of the battle, General Timofey Khryukin; new types of aircraft, including the La-5, which began to be used en masse at Stalingrad; changes in the tactics of the Air Force. The Soviet night light-engine aviation, as shown in the work, played an extremely important role on the banks of the Volga River in the fall of 1942. The U-2 biplanes, whose crews performed a colossal amount of work, proved themselves to be the best. The enemy is shown in relief: from the paragraph about German aces, for whom the star hour came then, we can see how dangerous they were for any of our pilots, how difficult it was to find counteraction to the enemy "hunters".
The work is based on Soviet and German archival materials. It provides statistical data, summarizes the losses of the parties, made a comparison of materiel. Generally prepared on a documentary basis, the book is richly illustrated with about 560 historical photographs, 16 appendices with copies of archival documents or compiled on their basis, as well as recollections of participants of the events. It will be of interest to a wide range of readers interested in military history.
