"The Guns of August" is one of the most significant historical works of the 20th century. It won the Pulitzer Prize, has been reprinted many times, and has been translated into all the world's leading languages. President John F. Kennedy recommended it as mandatory reading for his entourage during the Cuban Missile Crisis. He saw in Barbara Tuchman's book a vivid description of the avalanche-like process of sliding into war in the conditions of an acute international crisis and feared that in an unstable world with nuclear weapons, a similar situation could lead to even more catastrophic consequences.

...The inexorable logic of events gradually draws powers that, in essence, do not want to fight into a bloody whirlpool. But why do all the numerous attempts to prevent the incipient catastrophe fail?
