Aleksandr Isaevich Solzhenitsyn is a Russian writer, publicist, public figure, winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature ("For the moral force with which he continued the traditions of great Russian literature", 1970), winner of the State Prize of the Russian Federation for outstanding achievements in the field of humanitarian activity (2006), academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences. The novel "August of the Fourteenth" was published in 1971 in Paris, becoming the first book ("Knot", according to the author's definition) in the epic "Red Wheel", a large-scale historical and artistic canvas dedicated to the events in Russia in 1914-1917 years. The action of the novel takes place at the beginning of the First World War. Numerous plot lines, an abundance of characters (many of whom are famous historical figures), vivid, dramatic events, historical accuracy allow to call the novel one of the most significant historical works of the twentieth century.
