Saint Ignatius (Brianchaninov) (1807-1867) - great Russian theologian and preacher, Orthodox spiritual writer, canonized in 1988.
“Ascetic Experiences” in 2 parts is the saint’s invaluable contribution to the Orthodox teaching on asceticism - the science of salvation. Long before the canonization of St. Ignatius was revered as a spiritual mentor and teacher. “The works of the Right Reverend Ignatius,” noted the Venerable Elder Nikon of Optina, “are necessary, they are... the ABC of spiritual life.” The book was first published in 1865, two years before the blessed death of St. Ignatius, and thus became a kind of spiritual testament to his admirers. The first part of “Ascetic Experiences” included edifications about studying the Gospel and reading the holy fathers, about love for one’s neighbor and love for God, about fasting and prayer, reflections on faith and monasticism. This work reveals to the reader the unimagined experience of the ascetic saint, who created his spiritual life on the basis of the Holy Scriptures and the spiritual Tradition of Holy Orthodoxy. St. Ignatius sets out in detail the teaching of the holy fathers about faith, prayer, the Gospel commandments and beatitudes, repentance, humility, the fight against passions, applied to the peculiarities of life and the challenges of the world of his contemporary reader. The second part of “Ascetic Experiences,” which has become a reference book for monastics and laity, includes Words about the fear of God and the love of God, about the cell prayer rule and church prayer, about salvation and Christian perfection, and reflections on the destinies of God. This book tells how true living according to the Gospel leads to repentance and spiritual renewal. And also about the experience of the holy fathers, the laws of spiritual life, which the saint advises to follow with attention to everyone who has entered the narrow path, help to acquire a saving knowledge of oneself and reveal to a person the meaning of the Cross of Christ.
