Armenian tales

In many respects, the plots of Armenian fairy tales may seem remotely familiar to the modern reader - mysterious transformation, both for the sake of salvation and for the purpose of punishment for misdeeds, evil stepmother and her well-meaning stepdaughter, witches and sorcerers, brave "bogatyrs" resisting the evil, etc. The notable cross-influence is largely due to the fact that Armenia is on the "roadway" between the East and the West. Using common narratives, Armenian tales still retain their individuality: the folk art reflects the historical destiny of the country, its special geography and local mythology, as well as the originality of folk expressions, proverbs and sayings, preserved thanks to the skill of the translator.
The edition is accompanied by illustrations by Martiros Saryan, made especially for the 1933 edition.
