Why do we often perceive the modern city as a disturbing rather than a welcoming space? Why did late 20th-century architects embrace angular and sharp forms, and why do they design buildings that seem to be falling apart? Anthony Vidler shows how repressed fears of the future, "cultural dissatisfaction," and frustration with a sense of political powerlessness manifest themselves in architecture. The book examines the leaders of the architectural avant-garde of the late 1980s and 1990s, now recognized classics: Peter Eisenman, Rem Koolhaas, Liz Diller and Ricardo Scofidio, Bernard Tschumi, John Hejduk, and the Coop Himmelb(l)au firm. The author focuses on the concept of the uncanny, coined by Freud and rooted in the tradition of the Gothic novel and 19th-century horror literature. Vidler traces how motifs of anxiety, disunity, the loss of domesticity, and the disintegration of human identity gradually migrate from literature and psychoanalysis to architectural form. Each chapter of the book is a standalone essay exploring different aspects of the modern urban sensibility.

Anthony Vidler (1941–2023) was an architectural theorist and historian.
