Pyotr Yakovlevich Chaadayev (1794–1856) was a Russian philosopher and publicist, and the author of the famous Philosophical Letters. After publishing his first letter in the Telescope magazine in 1836, he was declared insane. In his works, Chaadayev discusses the purpose of Russia, the relationship between faith and human reason, the correct historical path, and, of course, individual freedom and its suppression. So what was Russia like through the eyes of Chaadayev, a “provocateur and a madman”? This edition includes selected works by Chaadayev, including all eight Philosophical Letters and An Apology for a Madman, written in response to accusations of a lack of patriotism, as well as the memoirs of his contemporaries.
