An Apology for Wreckage: The Theme of Ruins in the Context of European Cultural History
14.99 €
Ruins and ruinedness define the historical psychology of people in different eras—people whose existence is largely illusory, their knowledge fragmentary, and their understanding of existential issues discrete. What can be read in ruins? What emotions have they evoked in different centuries? Why can a ruin become a barricade against the advance of totalitarian doctrines? How do debris and rubble fit into today's paradigm of object-oriented art? Sergei Khachaturov's book is a collection of lectures and essays, arranged chronologically, reconstructing the history of the ruin theme. Departing from a purely archaeological interpretation of the concept as the remains of a destroyed building, the author invites the reader to follow the path along which European culture has explored ruins—from antiquity to contemporary art. Sergei Khachaturov is an art historian, associate professor in the Department of the History of Russian Art at the Faculty of History of Moscow State University, and the author of the book "Romanticism Beyond Romanticism," published by NLO.
