Cornelius Tacitus (c. 50s - c. 120) is one of the most famous historians of ancient Rome. Two of his great historical works, the Annals and the History, are included in this book. "Annals" describes the events of 14-68 AD, that is, from the death of Emperor Octavian Augustus to the end of the Julian-Claudian dynasty. "History" originally covered the period from 69 to 96 AD - the time of civil war in ancient Rome (the so-called year of the four emperors), as well as the reign of the Flavian dynasty. Both works have not reached us in full, which does not diminish their importance. Tacitus is deservedly recognized as the greatest of Roman historians due to his literary talent, deep analysis of sources and revealing the psychology of actors. His writings became widely known in Europe in Modern times and undoubtedly influenced the development of its historical and political thought.
