Prince Andrei Yuryevich Bogolyubsky is one of the most underrated figures in our history. The great-grandson of a Byzantine princess, grandson of an Anglo-Saxon king, and son of a Polovtsian princess, he dreamed of uniting Rus' under his rule. Under his rule, the center of the strife-torn country shifted to the northeast, and the Vladimir-Suzdal Principality, the future core of the Russian state, became one of the most powerful in Rus'. Having made Vladimir his capital, he launched a construction campaign there and, in just a few years, transformed the city into a rival to the fading Kyiv. True to his nickname, the prince founded numerous churches and instituted one of the most important Orthodox holidays—the Intercession of the Holy Virgin. This was one of the reasons why Nikolai Voronin's biography of Andrei Bogolyubsky failed to pass Soviet censorship. The author was accused of "priestly practices," and the type was destroyed. However, a print survived, which formed the basis for this edition. Nikolai Voronin (1904-1976) was a doctor of historical sciences and a laureate of the Stalin and Lenin prizes.
