To mark the 150th anniversary of the birth of Leonid Nikolaevich Andreyev (1871-1919), one of the founders of Russian Expressionism and a prominent figure of the Silver Age, a volume of his "Selected Works" is being published. This writer, whose works sparked heated debate among his contemporaries (some called his stories "exemplary vileness," while others—such as Maxim Gorky—admired his talent and ability to combine various literary styles and movements), enjoyed colossal fame in his lifetime, but was soon forgotten for a long time after his death. Only years later was Leonid Andreyev's work rediscovered, and he rightfully took his place of honor in the pantheon of 20th-century Russian literature.
