Hazel Sinnett is a lady who wants to be a surgeon more than she wants to get married. Jack Carrer is a resurrectionist trying to survive in a town where it's so easy to die. When the young people run into each other outside the Royal Anatomical Society, Hazel doesn't give it much thought. But after she gets kicked out of a lecture by famed surgeon Dr. Beecham, she realizes that her new acquaintance may be far more useful than she thought. And it's all about the deal Hazel made with the professor: if she prepares herself and passes the exam, he'll let her continue her medical career. She's not allowed to take the class, so the girl will need books, and she'll also need bodies for practical study. How fortunate that she now knows someone who digs up corpses professionally. But Jack has his own reasons to worry: strange people are hanging around cemeteries, his friends are disappearing off the streets, and the Roman fever that wiped out thousands of lives a few years ago is back in town. And no one seems to care about any of this. Except Hazel. Now Hazel and Jack must work together to uncover secrets buried not just in unmarked graves, but at the very heart of Edinburgh society.
