Anatoly Vasilyevich Lunacharsky (1875-1933) — a figure in the cultural history of the "red project" is undoubtedly key. As head of the People's Commissariat of Education, he directed education at all levels, the elimination of illiteracy, science, theater, literature, museums, fine arts, and held this post for almost 12 years — the longest of all the first People's Commissars. For many years Lunacharsky served as a "lightning rod" for the intelligentsia. Many thanks to him survived the horrors of the Civil War, the "red terror", repression and ideological persecution. He can be reproached for many blunders, but one thing can not take away: he piously believed in the beneficial power of culture in the formation of the "new man", remained a son of his tragic century.
